July 1 - National Doctor’s Day


National Doctor’s Day celebrates the contribution of all healers, leaders and innovators, who make our world a healthier, safer, better place to live in. It is a day to express immense gratitude to the doctors, who treat us when we get really ill and help us get to good health again.

National Doctor’s Day in Different Parts of the World

This day is observed on different dates in different parts of the world. Here in India, we observe the National Doctor’s Day on the 1st of July every year in the memory of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy. The day is celebrated on March 30 in the United States, February 27 in Vietnam, August 1 in Iran and December 3 in Cuba and so on.

All of India celebrates National Doctor’s Day on the 1st of July every year to honour the legendary physician Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, who was born on July 1, 1882 and died on the same date in 1962 at the age of 80.

Along with being a legendary physician, humanitarian and visionary of the country, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy was

  • A member of the Brahmo Samaj
  • The second Chief Minister of West Bengal, who remained at his post for 14 years, until his death in 1962
  • Highly respected physician
  • A renowned freedom fighter
  • Often considered the great architect of West Bengal, who founded 5 eminent cities - Durgapur, Kalyani, Bidhannagar, Ashokenagar and Habra
  • An alumnus of the Medical College Calcutta of the University of Calcutta
  • One of the few people to have completed both F.R.C.S. and M.R.C.P. simultaneously within only two years and three months
  • Honoured with India’s highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna on February 4, 1961

Why is National Doctor’s Day celebrated?

This day is observed to show how important are the doctors and physicians are to us and how important roles they play in our lives. The celebrations are a way to recognize the contributions of doctors and physicians to individual lives and communities.

Doctors, physicians and other medical professionals in India have together taken the responsibility of ensuring good health amongst the large population of India. We must say that medical treatments in India have seen a definite progress over the years. While people can be seen protesting against doctors who fail to do the needful, celebrations on the National Doctor’s Day can  be seen as an approach to thank and recognize all those doctors who have done their best to save lives against all odds.

How is the Day Celebrated?

National Doctor’s Day is celebrated by both government and non-government healthcare organizations every year by organizing a variety of events and activities. Discussion programs are organized related to the various aspects of medical profession including health check-up, cure, prevention, diagnosis, proper treatment and so on. Free medical checkup camps are organized by different health centers.

Patients greet their doctors and physicians, especially the family doctors, with greeting cards, appreciation cards, greeting messages, or a bouquet of flowers. Sometimes paying a visit to your doctor on the day just to wish them personally can make it a good day for them.  Hospitals or organizations can arrange commemorative dinners for all doctors. Many a times, doctors can be honoured in a ceremony for their contribution to the hospital or for any discovery in the medicinal line or for having served the mankind for a number of years.

The Rajasthan Tourism Department is organizing the festival. Along with the five-day festival, attractive tourism activities reflecting Rajasthan’s cultural and traditional colors will be held.
